Play helps children to process information and experiences. When a child feels overwhelmed by something in their internal experience they may use toys, art, dramatic play etc. to express their emotions.
Below are some common themes which are seen in play therapy with children who have experienced anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, or trauma.
It’s important you give children the space to play out these themes, and don’t criticize them even if the play seems a little morbid or aggressive. As long as it’s done through play, and they aren’t actually hurting anybody, allow for this natural process to help them heal.
