Reception – Viking boats

To continue our walk through history, reception explored Viking boats. We first began our learning by looking at all kinds of sea boats and their purpose and not only in Viking times but also our era. This then linked nicely into our maths lesson where we learnt about sinking and floating. The words ‘sink’ and ‘float’ were our learning vocabulary in this maths lesson. The children would feel their object before placing it in the water and make their prediction if it would sink or float. We also did a class vote to get all children’s opinions. To end our maths lesson, the children made individual paper boats which was their idea. This was great! We then ended our learning around Viking boats in our art lesson where the children were given the opportunity to create their own Viking boat from a range of different junk modelling materials. In this lesson we looked carefully at the features of a Viking boat such as their shape and patterns. Well done reception on your cross curriculum learning! Very proud!
