For this half term in Art Year 1 have explored sculptors and sculptures. We started by discussing that sculptures can be made of of anything and talking about our favourite sculptors including Anthony Gormley (we loved the Angel of the North!), Joanna Vasconcelos who used pans, mirrors and sand moulds, Nathan Sawaya (lego sculptures!), Jeff Koons (balloon sculptures!) and Damien Hurst who made a sculpture using hats!
Next we focused on sculptures by Mark Quinn, Jill Townley and Eva Rothschild. We then designed, made and evaluating our own sculptures using bread dough, cocktail sticks and marshmallows or plastic spoons and elastic bands!

We then started to look at clay. We explored different ways we could shape clay and designed our sculpture. Today we made our clay sculptures based on our designs. We are waiting for them to dry so that we can paint them after the holidays! If you would like to look at some sculptures with your child over half term you can find some at Leavesden Park. One of the homework tasks was to create a sculpture from single use plastic, it has been fantastic seeing the children’s ideas so far!
