Year 4

Year 4 pupils…

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year!
I hope everyone has had a restful Christmas break and that the children are now raring to go for a busy spring term.

Each week the children will need their full P.E. kits on a Wednesday and a swimming kit (swimsuit, hat and towel) on a Tuesday. In P.E. we will be completing both indoor and outdoor sports so please ensure your child has appropriate clothing for both, particularly over the colder months.

Every Monday homework tasks will be given to the children to be completed by the following Monday. These tasks are mostly fluency based, focusing on essential skills and we will go through the questions in class. Times Tables remain a priority and the expectation is that all children should be fluent on all tables up to 12×12 before the end of Year 4. Please continue to support your child in this by making sure they complete at least 20 minutes a week on our online resource, Times Table Rockstars. There have been some huge improvements with many children who practice these skills regularly – keep it up!

Reading is a key skill and enables children to access the whole curriculum. Please encourage your children to read as often as possible, aiming to read aloud with an adult at least 3 times each week (including free readers). This, along with any independent reading, should be recorded in their reading record and brought into school each day.

Children on the colour band reading scheme should put their reading wallet in the blue basket in the classroom as soon as they have finished it to be changed for another. I would be grateful if you could please remind your child to do this/ ensure their reading wallets are always in their bag.

Our theme this term is ‘Female Explorers’. There are lots of exciting activities planned and I am sure Year 4 will enjoy learning about a variety of influential women across our History, Geography, Art and D and T lessons. This half term our History lessons will focus on the changing role of women through history.

If you have any queries or concerns, please speak with me at the end of the day or phone the school office and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am looking forward to another busy term ahead with your children.
